Ringing in Election Day

Ragnarok… Twilight of the Gods… It might be hyperbolic, and even a bit too “jokey.” However, taking a cue from Opera Depot’s Election Day sale of various versions of Richard Wagner’s opera Götterdämmerung, the finale seems all too appropriate in relation to the 2016 election at a number of levels. In this reappropriation of Wagner from another dangerous political movement that exploited discontent and engaged in fearmongering, one finds oaths and betrayals; the collapse of an existing order; and even references to the exploitation of nature, which (to my mind, at least) shares metaphorical parallels with concerns surrounding the Dakota Access Pipeline. And all in this proto-steampunk production of the opera that sets it around Wagner’s own time, underscoring the continuity of myths and reality, past and present, and the political nature of a genre that all too often tries to hide its multitude of possible ideological underpinnings.
