Formal biography
Jason Neal is a professional librarian with a background in history, as well as a broad range of other interests. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Ohio Wesleyan University (Phi Beta Kappa, 1995), as well as a Master of Library Science from Texas Woman’s University (2000). Upon graduation, he worked for several years as a subject specialist in the University of Texas at Arlington’s Science and Engineering Library. In addition, he has taught library courses as an adjunct at Texas Woman’s University, North Carolina Central University, and the University of Western Ontario.
Currently in his second year of doctoral studies, Neal attends the University of Western Ontario’s Library and Information Sciences program, a component of the Faculty of Information and Media Studies. Accompanying employment positions have included work as a graduate research assistant, teaching assistant, and limited-duties lecturer. He is also contributing a chapter about genre and recommender systems (“Precedent or Preference? The Construction of Genre and Music Recommender Systems”) to the book Indexing and Retrieval of Non-Text Information, to be published in May 2012.
Raised in the small rural community of Montpelier, Ohio, Neal currently resides in London, Ontario. He lives there with his spouse Diane Rasmussen Neal, an assistant professor at the University of Western Ontario, as well as their chihuahua Sophie and black tuxedo cat Dana (named after this opera character and television series character, respectively).
